History of Chiropractic
One day in 1878, while working in a contorted position on his stomach, Harvey Lillard heard a noise, felt something move in his neck and then heard ringing in his ears. A few days later, he had lost his hearing. He spent seventeen years in silence. On September 18, 1895, Harvey Lillard related his story with Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer who practiced in Davenport, Iowa, in the building where Ryan Lillard was a janitor.
Palmer examined the calm concierge and discovered a lump in the area where Lillard said he had heard the noise. Reasoning that this malformation was the result of misalignment of one of the 24 vertebrae of the spine, Palmer convinced Lillard to allow him to attempt to return it to normal.
Palmer applied a force to the upper part of his spine near his skull at C1. With Palmer's adjustive force, this misalignment was removed and within days, his hearing returned to Lillard. In the process, Chiropractic was born.
Chiropractic is a relatively new profession - a little over 100 years. Although the profession is young, many of the philosophical principles date back thousands of years.
Although the ancient Egyptians and Greeks had little knowledge about the internal structure of the human body, they already knew the continuing effort of the body to heal itself and be healthy.
During the Renaissance time-period, men of knowledge theorized a proposal that spoke of "vital forces" within the body which organized the body's resistance to disease and thus kept the body healthy. This "life force" is what the Doctors of Chiropractic refer to as the body's inner intelligence.
It was Daniel David Palmer, who in 1895 discovered the relationship between the vital forces of the body, nervous system, spine, and the expression of health. He realized that the domestic intelligence continually strives to keep the body in harmony and perfect organization. He also discovered that the innate intelligence uses the nervous system to coordinate, regulate and control all functions within the human body.
DD Palmer also argued that a vertebrae that was only slightly misaligned could cause pressure on spinal nerves via its subsequent inflammatory process. This misalignment and nerve interference that results is called a vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation modifies the messages traveling from the brain to the body, and results in the bodily functions being modified. In this state, the body is less able to maintain its own health, and ultimately life can not express tits optimum potential.
After adjusting one misaligned vertebrae (subluxated), Palmer first saw the restoration of the integrity of the column and as a result, witnessed dramatic changes in health, vitality and well-being. Chiropractic grew rapidly under the leadership of son DD Palmer, BJ, who transformed the profession of Chiropractic in an advanced philosophy and a well-developed art.
Today, Chiropractic has evolved into a highly developed philosophy, science and art that restores the body's natural ability to repair and restore greater levels of health, wellness and vitality.
Chiropractic as a profession of primary health care, recognizes and respects the body's innate ability to maintain its own health and has also developed sophisticated techniques to correct misalignments of the spine (vertebral subluxations) which cause major interference to the function of the body. Today, in the United States there are about 18 schools and about 80,000 Doctors of Chiropractic practitioners worldwide.
